Bill's Town & Country Speech

November 2007

                    Dan Chavez and Bill Durston

                Campaign Manger Dan Chavez

                          with Bill Durston at the

                            APAPA Voters' Forum

Letter from Campaign Manager Dan Chavez

I am excited to join the Durston for Congress Team and am looking forward to meeting all of you during the course of this campaign.  We are working hard to honor all the hard work of the past and pave a road to victory with a campaign plan, new web site, precinct by precinct targeting, expanding our volunteer base and raising the funds to get our message out.

Ours must be a campaign which the captures the "change" you and our voters seek and which offers a choice between the two candidates.  We will work relentlessly to effectuate that change and we will succeed because the lost lives in Iraq make it imperative that we do.

I learned my campaign skills early from the United Farm Workers and Cesar Chavez and among the most valued lessons I learned is to persevere and that the quest for justice is paved with the hard work of noble people.  So I am honored to join you and pledge to you a fun but hard working campaign we will all be proud of.

(Quick Link to the video of Bill's Speech is on the left)

On October 16, 2007, Bill received the Robert Matsui Award from the Town and Country Democrats at their annual Fundraising dinner.   Many in the audience were touched by Bill's eloquent, heartfelt acceptance speech which gave honor to the legacy of Congressman Robert Matsui.  We need more people to hear Bill's message.  If you belong to groups or clubs and there are opportunities to invite Bill to speak, whether it is the Rotary, Elks, a neighborhood association, or anything else where groups of people meet, consider hosting him at one of your meetings.  Find out if your group is interested in hearing Bill, check on possible dates and email Marilyn Sabin at msabin@sabwis.com with the information about the group, number of attendees, etc.  She will check calendars and get back to you.

CD3 News from Amador County

        Amador County Democrats

Amador County is off and running early for the Bill Durston campaign!  Bill spoke at the November 1st meeting of the Amador Progressive Women's Committee in Jackson.  Well into its third year, the group includes many community activists, working women, and retirees. There was an enthusiastic  capacity crowd to welcome Bill to Jackson. We gained some committed Durston for       Congress volunteers as a result. It was a pleasure to also have some of Bill's staff members, Marilyn Sabin and Dan Chavez, in attendance as well.  Later that evening the Amador County Democratic Central Committee, now chaired by Randy Bayne, sponsored the first public showing of Michael Moore's SICKO.  Nearly 100 people came to the Jackson Rancheria for the showing and enjoyed Bill's speech before the movie.  The post-event buzz was that it was a great evening.  People were thoughtful, energized, and ready to go to work.  On Saturday, the Amador Democrats met for a pre-election-year party and strategy planning meeting.  This gave us an opportunity to visit and exchange ideas garnered from the various training sessions attended during the past year.  Our plan is to put those good ideas into practice, and help get Bill Durston elected to Congress in 2008!

VOTE NOW  on Campaign Slogan

Recently, a group of Durston volunteers met to talk about ideas around campaign messaging, audio/visual issues, use of the web, etc. The group consisted of seven folks who had worked on the campaign last year and have been involved in media work.  We met with our Campaign Manager, Dan Chavez, and brainstormed many ideas for the 2008 campaign. We are trying to settle on a short, catchy slogan to use on signs, T-shirts, campaign correspondence, the website, TV and radio ads, et cetera. We are interested in knowing which of the following slogans you prefer. You can do a mini survey of your own asking friends and neighbors which slogan they like. And tell them, while you're at it, why you support Bill Durston, and why they should too.

Letters to the Editor

Remember their vote as you vote

Re "SCHIP by the numbers - and key ones to call," Oct. 15: Shame on Reps. Wally Herger, R-Marysville, Dan Lungren, R-Gold River, and John Doolittle, R-Roseville.

They talk "values" and "family," but when on Thursday a key vote came on the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to provide health care for 10 million children in low-income and lower-middle-income working families, all three voted no. Remember this vote when you cast your ballot!

-          William F. Hellmuth, Carmichael

Rep. Dan Lungren vs. kids' health

Re "Help override Bush veto," editorial, Oct. 6: Do you really think there is any point in asking Rep. Dan Lungren, R-Gold River, to end his insidious fight against the State Children's Health Insurance Program?

This is a man who seems affronted by the very existence of Medicare and Social Security.

It is no surprise that Lungren is one of a few holdouts in the House of Representatives who are blocking an override of Bush's veto of SCHIP (the popular state-run health insurance program for poor and near-poor children).

This is the same man who, in the wake of Katrina, showed no compassion for disaster victims abandoned by the Bush administration or indignation at FEMA's inept response, but waxed eloquent in raging against looters.

Presumably, he did not mind the use of Blackwater mercenaries in New Orleans, at a cost of $950 per man per day -- not to rescue victims on rooftops but to shoot suspected wrongdoers.

- Jane O'Donnell, Orangevale

An alternative to Lungren

There is new hope within the Third Congressional District.

Those of us who pay attention to what is going on in Washington realize that President Bush has had consistent, short-sighted, in-block and unsighted support from the Republican congressional representatives in Congress. It has been a spectacle difficult to watch as our own Congressman, Dan Lungren, has given his support to each of the disastrous Bush policies imposed upon the American people.

For each person who voted for Lungren in past elections, there is now a solution that can realign your conscience.

We in the Third District have a bona fide Marine combat hero challenging Lungren in the 2008 campaign, one whose public support grows daily.

Many in the Sacramento area and elsewhere already know Dr. Bill Durston and are, therefore, acquainted with his dedicated life to the service of others. He will add a high degree of desperately needed respect to Congress.

"DurstonForCongress.Org," provides a wonderful sketch of a person ready and willing to represent the Third District in the manner residents of this district deserve.

- Harold A. Keiser, Pioneer
